Gaea's Locket Ch. 14

Satomi worked quietly, filling out paperwork on the client she had just seen. As she sighed in boredom, she noticed something moving on her desk. She looked at the beautiful red rose on her desk as it began moving around, as it was dancing. She smiled and turned to her door, “I know you're there, Kota.” He smiled as he came in and she asked, “Is it a really good idea to be using your powers out in the open like that?”“You're the only one in the room. I think it's fine.” he told her.
“So what brings you here? Are you in need of a psychologist?” she questioned as she put her work to the side.
“Sort of. I was wondering if you want to go out for lunch with me today?” he asked. “I'm off work today and was hoping to hang out with you.”
“Yum~! Lunch sounds awesome! Let's go!” she said excited as she grabbed her coat and they headed out of her office. Snow danced down from the sky and landed softly on Satomi's skin as she then remembered, “Oh, shoot... I forgot, Mai and I had plans to get lunch together today...” Kota shrugged, “That's fine. She can join us for lunch.”
“But I don't want her to feel like a third wheel-- Oh!” she then lit up. She turned to him, “Your friend at the Thanksgiving Party! The one who was dancing with Mai... do you think you can call him up so he and Mai can pair up. Like a double date!”
“Sure... hopefully he'll be able to come...” he said pulling out his phone and dialed Daiki's number.
~
“Thanks again, Rini.” Mai smiled as the two walked out of her classroom as her students began doing some arts and crafts. “The kids really love animals. The always have a fun time seeing you.”
“I'm really glad they do.” she beamed as she held another cat, Aiko, in her arms. “Oh, what day should Kaori come to talk to them? About animation?”
“Thursday would be best.” she told her. “As long as its okay with her schedule.” Rini nodded, “Yea, that's fine.” They soon heard a honk as a car pulled up.
“Hey, Mai.” they heard as Daiki got out of the car.
“Daiki? Hey, what are you doing here?” she asked surprised. “Satomi told me to pick you up. Seems like we're having a double date with her and Kota.”
“A d-d-date?” she said with a small blush. He nodded, “I hope you don't mind me being your date.”
“N-no of course not... but I still have to watch over these kids until their parents pick them up.” she stated. He shrugged, “That's fine. I'll wait with you.” He headed in as Mai followed after. He began goofing around with the kids a large smile was on his happy face. Mai smiled as the kids tackled him down.
“Oof.” Daiki groaned as the kids dog piled on him. Mai giggled, “you are good with kids.” He nodded, “yeah. I've always enjoyed being with kids.”
“So do you work with kids as a living?” She questioned. He answered, “no I don't. I'm an archaeologist. But I have lots of little cousins. I just don't get to see them that often because of work. Not to mention they live kinda far.”
“Oh, well. I'm sure we'd be happy to have you. The kids sure seem to enjoy you.” she stated.
“Well, thanks. I'll come by whenever I get a break.” he smiled. They continued to chat as all the kids were soon picked up and they headed off to meet Kota and Satomi for lunch.
~
“Hey, you actually came...” Yuya smiled as Hakufu approached him. He sat by a fountain at the park as she took a seat next to him, “So, why did you suddenly ask me out here? Did you need something?” He smiled, “I can't just ask you to hang out with me?”
“Why would you want to hang out with me?” she questioned.
“Cuz you're fun to be with.” he answered as she gave him a look, “This is only the third time we've met up. We rarely hang out. How would you know if I'm fun to be with?”
“Hmmm, well, for one thing. Time seems to go by to fast when I'm with you.” he smiled. He stood up and shivered, “How about we get some coffee to warm up? It's freezing out here.” He held out a hand to her, but she just stood up, “Remember I have fire power. I'm warm enough as it is.”
“Heh, aren't you lucky?” he stated. “I guess some good can come from your powers.”
“No-- well... I guess.” she said softly. “But I still don't want them. They're just troublesome to me. The sooner its gone the better.”
“Can it really be that bad?” he wondered as they began walking through the snow. She nodded, “It's not fun. Every second I'm scared that I won't be able to control these powers. That it will go beserk at any time. Fire... it's not that easy to control, that's why I really don't want the responsibility of wielding this ability.”
“So if it was another power, you wouldn't mind?”
“Well, I guess it would depend.” she answered. “But either way. I think just having powers would be troublesome. I mean, sure... they might come in handy, but all it does is cause trouble.”
“What sort of trouble?”
“In some cases, chaos.” she thought. “Greedy people would want to use these powers. Lots of people would want to take advantage of the person with these abilities. Powers like this... they always come with consequences.”
“You've got lots of points there.” he sighed. “But don't you think that this was given to you for a reason. Maybe because you might be the only one who knows how to use it correctly.”
“... I dunno... let's just change the subject.” she sighed.
“Sure. So you work at the animal shelter right?” he asked.
“Yea. I'm a vet.” she said. “And how long have you been working in that music store?” He replied, “No more than two years. It's probably not as well paying as being a vet, but its a fun job.” She nodded, “Being surrounded with music. That does sound like an awesome job. It would be perfect if it would just pay more.” The two soon reached the coffee shop and sat together chatting about each others lives.
~
“So, how's all the environmentalist stuff going for you?” Satomi asked as they took their seats in World Cuisines. He smiled, “Actually its been getting much better. Because of my... gift... I've been growing more trees and plants, its really helping out the Earth. Thanks for asking.”
“No problem. I thought you'd be using your powers.” she stated. “It's interesting... you were once sort of afraid of your powers and now, its like your best friend.”
“Well, I wouldn't say best friend, but it's definitely a great help.” he beamed. “How's work going for you?”
“It's been kind of slow. And none of my patients have been as exciting as you have.” she told him. He chuckled, “Well, I am one-of-a-kind. It's gonna be hard to find another person like me.” She smiled, “haha that's true-- oh! Mai!” They both looked towards the door where Mai and Daiki had just entered. The two sat down with them as Daiki said, “Thanks for letting me join you all for lunch.”
“Anytime Daiki.” Satomi smiled. “I'm glad you had time to join us. I'm surprised to see that you have the day off.”
“Yea, things have been busy lately. And Keito's been working me to the bones.” he laughed.
“So what makes today any different?” Kota wondered as he answered, “Well its actually not just today. It probably all this week.”
“Wow. What's the occasion?” Mai asked as they ordered their food. He told them, “Well, Yuki's really been on his back about taking a break since he never seems to stop thinking about this mystery. So she decided to take him away for a while to her grandparents house. She thinks the farther away he is from us, the more relax he'll be.”
“Haha, well at least they get a fun vacation.” Kota beamed. “Being a college professor has it's advantages.”
“Yup. I bet those two will have fun.” Satomi winked. Daiki laughed, “So you see it too?”
“Yea~ It's obvious that there's something going on between the two!” she beamed. “Seriously, I was shocked to hear that they weren't together. Maybe this trip will change that.”
“I guess we'll find out.” Mai smiled.
“So anyways... how long have you two been going out?” Daiki questioned as Satomi blushed a bit, “Wha-What?! We aren't together if that's what you're asking...”
“Oh. Sorry...” he said. “I didn't mean to make this an awkward conversation.
“I-It's fine.”
“How long have you two known each other?” Daiki rephrased his questioned. Kota answered, “A month before the thanksgiving party. So... I think over two months.” Daiki smiled, “Oh, so not that much longer than the rest of us. You two must be pretty close then.”
“I guess.... we hang out whenever possible.” Satomi stated. “So what took you two so long? Having some fun out together?” Mai rolled her eyes as she said, “Daiki was waiting for me to finish work. He got along really well with the kids.”
“Haha, they're fun aren't they? And so adorable!” Satomi smiled. The four continued to talk about their everyday lives as lunch soon came.
~
“Really? Wow...that's sure is a long time.” Yuya said. “You must really like animals. To be working with them for so long.” Hakufu nodded, “Yea. I do. With them... I'm never the second choice. They need me. They want me to help them out. It's different with the animals than with people.”
“So.. you tend to always be people's second choice...” he wondered as she nodded, “Yea... whether it was with family, friends, … boyfriends...” He saw a hurt look appear on her face as he sighed, “Well, its their lost.”
“What?” she wondered.
“You're a really great girl.” he told her. “They don't know what they're missing. Stupid exes shouldn't tell you otherwise. If people tend to pick others over you, then they really don't know you.” She smiled a bit as he continued, “I know we don't know each other really well, yet... but I enjoy being with you. My day seems so much more livelier and fun. I never want the day to end.”
“...really? Thanks.” she said modestly.
“It's the truth and you should know that.” he said.
“You're great too, Yuya.” she stated. “I'm glad... that I have a friend as great as you.” He beamed, “Thanks. Well, whenever you want...” He handed her a piece of paper with his phone number on it. “Give me a call. I'll be sure to be there.” She nodded as he then asked, “So, what should we do now?”
“Let's just take a walk...” Hakufu stated.
“In this weather?” he said as snow continued to fall. “It's cold...” He then felt her hand grasp his as he saw a small blush on her face as she smiled, “Don't worry... I'll keep you warm.” He felt the warmth of fire move through his hands, filling his body. He gave a little laugh as they walked around.
~
“Haha, today was fun~! We need to double date again soon!” Satomi beamed as they left World Cuisines. Kota nodded, “I'm fine with that. Whenever you guys are free.”
“Haha, we might need to go again some time this week.” Mai stated as Daiki smiled, “Yea, when Keito gets back I might not have anymore free time. Haha, it's just gonna be work, work, work.” Mai then said, “Well, then we should still hang out. We could go to the park and play in the snow. Or we can go to the mall...”
“i wish.” Satomi sighed. “I still have some work to finish. Filing is so boring.” Kota offered, “I'll help out. Maybe doing it with a friend will be better.” She smiled, “That would be awesome! Thanks Kota.”
“Well, while you two are working... we'll go have some fun~!” Daiki smiled as he and Mai headed off towards the park.
~
“Ah!” Mai shivered as snow fell on her from the tree above. “It's so cold!” Daiki laughed, “haha, Here.” He wiped it off her face as he smiled, “Better?” She nodded, “Y-yea...” The two sat together that snowy night as Daiki thought, “So... you only work as a teacher part-time right? What are you doing the rest of the time?”
“Working else where...” she sighed. “Supermarkets, libraries... wherever I can. I live alone in an apartment near the kindergarten. I gotta find some way to pay that rent.”
“Why don't you just get a full time job?” he wondered as she thought and sighed once again, “I... I never went to school, so I don't have the degrees or anything that qualifies me for full-time jobs.”
“Oh... well, even if you never went to school, there are still other options.” he thought.
“Like what?”
“Well, why not be a full-time kindergarten teacher?”
“It's not enough to pay for my rent.” she told him.
“Well, how about you work full-time there, and afterwards, you can work with me and I'll pay you? All you gotta do is assist me with some research. Not so hard, right?” he thought with a smile. She gave a surprised look, “Really? You'd do that?”
“yea, why not--” he stopped as she suddenly hugged him, “Thank you, thank you, thank you! You don't know how much this means to me!”
“Haha, no problem.” he beamed. “It'll be nice... spending more time with you.” A small blush grew on her face as Daiki sighed and stood up, “Well, it's getting late... I'll walk you home.” She nodded as they two took off.
